Neoliquiritin is a polyphenolic compound that binds to the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, inhibiting its activity. It has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as inhibit squamous cell carcinoma in mice. Neoliquiritin also inhibits mitochondrial functions, which may be due to its ability to bind to the mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme succinate dehydrogenase. This drug also has been shown to interact with alcohol dehydrogenase and indole alkaloids, and is metabolized by the liver. Neoliquiritin has a response element that is activated by toll-like receptor 7 and 8, an analytical method using HPLC, and a matrix effect on chromatography.
