Pasireotide acetate is a cyclic peptide that is a somatostatin receptor agonist. It is used to treat carcinoid syndrome, which is a cancer of the endocrine system. Pasireotide acetate binds to and activates the somatostatin receptors in the body, thereby reducing the production of hormones such as insulin, glucagon, and growth hormone from cells in the pancreas. It also has been shown to reduce serum prolactin levels in humans. Pasireotide acetate has been found to be effective for treating symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome, such as diarrhea and flushing. This drug has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with active disease or those who have had no response to other treatments. Pasireotide acetate can also be used as a diagnostic marker for carcinoid syndrome by measuring serum prolactin levels before and after administration of pasireotide acetate.
