Psoralen is a natural compound that has been used as a photosensitizing agent in the treatment of various skin diseases. It acts by binding to DNA and cross-linking with adjacent pyrimidine bases, leading to inhibition of DNA synthesis or repair. Psoralen is used in the treatment of vitiligo, psoriasis, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Psoralen has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and induce apoptosis in these cells. The effects of psoralen on human skin are due to its ability to enhance the sensitivity of melanocytes and keratinocytes to ultraviolet radiation. Psoralen can be synthesized from coumarin derivatives and is often used as an analytical reagent for quantifying camp concentration.
