Perphenazine is a low-potency antipsychotic drug. It is used to treat various mental disorders, including schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. Perphenazine inhibits the uptake of dopamine into nerve cells, thereby blocking the effects of dopamine on these cells. This medication may also be used to treat bowel disease by slowing down the movement of food through the intestine. The drug has been shown to have a number of side effects, including increased levels of serum prolactin, which can lead to symptoms such as breast enlargement in men and women and impotence in men. A pharmacological treatment for perphenazine overdose includes administration of activated charcoal, which binds with the drug in the stomach and intestines, preventing it from being absorbed into the bloodstream. The therapeutic range for perphenazine is 0.5-2 ng/mL for serum levels and 10-20 ng/mL for cerebrospinal fluid levels; toxicological studies have found that an oral dose of 400 mg per day
