Panipenem is a basic protein that belongs to the group of antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to have synergic effects with other antibiotics, such as penicillin and cefazolin, against various infectious diseases. Panipenem also has a high level of resistance against bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. This drug binds to the penicillin-binding proteins of bacterial cell walls by competitive inhibition and inhibits bacterial growth by preventing cell division. As an antibiotic, panipenem acts on the DNA polymerase in bacteria and prevents RNA synthesis. In addition, it can cause cell lysis through oxidative injury to human serum albumin or erythrocytes in humans.
