Senecivernine is a natural compound that may have anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic effects. Senecivernine is an n-oxide of retrorsine, which is a toxic alkaloid found in plants of the genus Senecio. It has been shown to inhibit TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and to induce matrix metalloproteinase activity in vitro. The toxicity of senecivernine has been studied in mice and rats, where it was found to cause dose-dependent inhibition of weight gain, liver enlargement, and death. Senecivernine also inhibits the growth of cancer cells in culture. Senecivernine has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycob
