Strontium ranelate is a strontium salt that is used to treat osteoporosis. It is approved for use in postmenopausal women who are at high risk of fracture. Strontium ranelate has been shown to be effective in vitro and in vivo, as well as in humans. The drug binds to the cation channel TRPV6 and inhibits calcium influx into the cell, thereby reducing bone resorption by osteoclasts. Strontium ranelate also increases the synthesis of new bone by stimulating the production of collagenase and insulin-like growth factor-1. This drug can cause skin reactions such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme, but these adverse effects are rare.
