Tretoquinol is an analog of the drug tretinoin, which is used in the treatment of asthma. It has been shown to inhibit the production of collagen in the lungs. Tretoquinol also inhibits the activity of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by preventing viral attachment to cells and inhibiting viral replication. Tretoquinol is a solute compound that can be found in urine samples as a glucuronide conjugate. Symptoms of tretoquinol toxicity include cardiac arrhythmias and heart tissue damage, which are caused by its ability to inhibit sodium-potassium ATPase activity. Autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus have been linked to tretoquinol use.
