Vadadustat is a drug that is used to treat iron overload caused by chronic transfusions in patients with chronic kidney disease. It is a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor that inhibits the activity of MMP-9, which degrades collagen and elastin in the blood vessels. Vadadustat has been shown to be effective in experimental models of renal disease and heart failure. This drug also has a low potential for hepatotoxicity, as it does not affect the concentration-time curve for iron concentration in the liver or picolinic acid excretion. Vadadustat binds to transferrin receptors and prevents iron from being released into the body.
