Violoxanthin is a carotenoid found in many plants. It is a dinucleotide phosphate that contains two p-hydroxybenzoic acid molecules, one fatty acid molecule and one 9-cis-violaxanthin molecule. Violoxanthin has been shown to have light-absorbing properties which may be due to its ability to absorb light energy and convert it into a 9-cis form of violaxanthin. Violoxanthin has also been shown to stimulate photosynthesis in vitro by increasing the production of chlorophyll and other carotenoids. This compound has been shown to increase kidney bean production in vivo, as well as light exposure in human subjects.
