Vasicine is a toxic substance that is used to study the mechanism of toxicity. It is an alkaloid obtained from the plant "Aconitum napellus" and has been shown to have properties as an antidiabetic agent, antimicrobial agent, and prostate cancer cell inhibitor. Vasicine inhibits fatty acid biosynthesis in rat liver microsomes by competitive inhibition of the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase. It also inhibits malonic acid oxidation, which can lead to metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. Vasicine is a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth in vitro and has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and acne vulgaris.
