Product Information
3-(Hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanol is an organic compound that has two hydroxyl groups. It is the simplest member of the furan class of compounds, and is a hydrogenated cyclopentane with a hydroxyl group at C-3. The phenolic hydroxyl group (C-2) in 3-(Hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanol reacts with acidic hydrogen to form a carboxylic acid-hydroxy acid ester, which can be hydrolyzed to form 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. 3-(Hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanol also reacts with alkene to form an alkene, which can be oxidized to form a carbocyclic nucleoside. The reaction mechanism for this process includes the formation of an enolate ion and its protonation by water. 3-(Hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanol has been shown to have bifunctional catalytic activity in the oxidation
