CH 55 is a pluripotent cell line that was derived from the human fetal liver. CH 55 cells are senescent, which means they have a limited life span and do not replicate. CH 55 cells can be used to study the effects of synthetic retinoids on cellular differentiation. Synthetic retinoids are compounds that are structurally similar to vitamin A and they have been shown to inhibit angiogenesis in fat cells by blocking receptor binding and transfection experiments.
CH 55 cells can also be used as a model system for hepatic steatosis, where fatty acids accumulate in the liver due to lack of insulin. CH 55 cells show an activity index of 1, meaning that they produce about one-third as much lipids as control hepatocytes in culture.
