2,5-Dideoxy-2,5-imino-D-mannitol (DDIM) is a novel antiviral drug that inhibits viral replication by inhibiting the viral DNA polymerase. The antiviral properties of DDIM have been shown in vitro and in vivo models to be effective against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and human rhinovirus type 2 (HRV-2). DDIM has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. This compound has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA. DDIM is a substrate for enzymes such as glycosidases or phosphatases that are used in biocompatible polymers and can be used as an alternative polymerization agent. In vitro studies on rat hearts have shown that this compound can improve heart function and reduce cholesterol levels.
