6-O-a-Maltosyl-b-cyclodextrin is a synthetase that has been shown to increase the transport of drugs across the enterocyte membrane. This agent can be used to prepare pharmaceutical preparations and is currently being studied for its potential use in treating intestinal diseases. 6-O-a-Maltosyl-b-cyclodextrin has been shown to be more effective against drug resistant strains of bacteria, such as Clostridium difficile, than other agents. It also has a low toxicity profile and is not irritating to the gastrointestinal tract or mucosa.
