Polygalacic acid is a polyhydroxy acid that has been shown to induce autophagy in cancer cells. Polygalacic acid inhibits the activities of enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, including p-hydroxybenzoic acid hydroxylase, cholesterol esterase, and squalene epoxidase. It also blocks the production of prostaglandin E2. This compound is found in peucedanum root and has been studied for its anticancer activity against squamous carcinoma cell lines. Polygalacic acid also inhibits the growth of Candida glabrata and other fungi. The analytical method used to measure polygalacic acid has been validated by measuring its concentration in angelica dahurica extract, which contains high levels of this compound.
