Saikosaponin A is a naturally occurring plant compound that has been shown to have dose-dependent cytotoxic activity. Saikosaponin A and its analogs are extracted from the root of the medicinal herb Saikosaponia japonica, which is indigenous to Japan. The extract can be obtained at different extraction temperatures, with higher temperatures yielding more active compounds. Saikosaponin A has been shown to induce apoptosis in cultured tumor cells by activating caspase-2 and inducing nuclear protein degradation. This compound also has an antiviral effect against HIV-1, inhibiting the expression of cox-2 protein in adipose tissue.
