Description

This compound is a cytotoxic glycoalkaloid and a commonly found secondary metabolite in the plants of the genus Solanum. Solamargine penetrates cell membrane, inhibits growth of tumoral cell lines and induces apoptosis at low micromolar concentrations. It also sensitises cancer cell lines to the treatment with chemotherapeutic agents, such as cisplatin, epirubicin and trastuzumab. The compound was seen to inhibit P-glycoprotein in neuroblastoma cell line.
