Belinostat is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that prevents the removal of acetyl groups from histones, which are proteins that package DNA into chromatin. Belinostat has been shown to exhibit anticancer activity against solid tumours and lymphomas. It has also been shown to decrease the expression of matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes involved in tumour invasion and metastasis. Belinostat may be a potential biomarker for squamous carcinoma and other cancers. This drug also has an effect on mitochondrial membrane potential, which is important for regulating cell death and proliferation.
