Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker that binds to voltage-dependent calcium channels and prevents the entry of calcium ions into the cell. Nifedipine is used as an antihypertensive agent, especially in combination with other medications such as losartan, to treat hypertension. It has been shown in clinical trials to be more effective than placebo in lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of stroke or heart attack. Nifedipine also has antioxidative properties, which may be due to its ability to reduce hydrogen bonding interactions. This drug can also cause bowel disease, which can lead to drug interactions with medications such as warfarin and digoxin.
