Ruboxistaurin mesylate is a drug that inhibits phosphodiesterase-4, which is an enzyme that breaks down cyclic AMP. It is used in the treatment of pandemic influenza to reduce its symptoms. Ruboxistaurin mesylate has been shown to increase the glomerular filtration rate and improve renal function in patients with chronic kidney disease or diabetes. This drug also activates the release of growth factors by increasing cyclic AMP levels and inhibits the production of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Ruboxistaurin mesylate may have an effect on body mass index, but this has not yet been confirmed.
