Description:

MK-886 is a small molecule that acts as an inhibitor of the protein Mcl-1. It has shown to be effective in vitro for the treatment of atherosclerosis and bowel disease. MK-886 binds to Mcl-1, which promotes apoptosis by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing cytosolic Ca2+ levels. MK-886 also inhibits the expression of PGE2, which is associated with bowel disease. The pharmacology of MK-886 has been investigated using a model system, including hl60 cells and 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. These cell lines are used to study the effects on cell nuclei and mitochondrial membrane potential. In vivo studies have also been conducted using an experimental model that examines atherosclerotic lesions in mice treated with MK-886.
