5-(Azepan-2-ylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione is a potent and selective activator of the TRPM7 ion channel. It was developed as a research tool to study the TRP family of ion channels. The compound binds to the TRPM7 receptor with high affinity and specificity and can be used to investigate the role of TRPM7 in various physiological processes. 5-(Azepan-2-ylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione has also been shown to inhibit protein interactions with the receptor by binding to the ATP site on the ligand binding domain. As an example, it blocks activation of AMPA receptors by glutamate in rat hippocampal neurons.
