Myxochelin A is a synthetase that was first isolated from Myxobacterium. It is a potent antimicrobial agent and has been shown to be active against Gram-positive bacteria and mycobacteria, but not against Gram-negative bacteria. The structure of myxochelin A consists of a fatty acid tail with an amino acid side chain at the end. This basic structure is synthesized by the enzyme fatty acyl synthetase (FAS). Myxochelin A has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity in cells in culture, which may be due to its ability to inhibit transcriptional regulation and induce apoptosis.
