W-84 is a brominated organic compound that can act as an electron donor in the presence of oxygen, with anti-oxidative activity. It has been found to be a strong inhibitor of ATP-binding cassette transporter proteins and also binds to receptor α. W-84 has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthesis by binding to the acyl carrier protein and preventing the transfer of acyl groups into the mitochondria. W-84 has also been shown to have histological effects on fatty acid metabolism in mice, reducing atherosclerotic lesion formation and inhibiting atherogenesis.
The molecule is reactive and can undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with amines, thiols, or sulfhydryls. It reacts with glucosinolates in plants to form ester compounds such as 3-(3′-bromoacetamido)glucosinolate (BAGS).
