Irindalone is a drug that has been used to treat chronic pain and blood pressure. It is an analog of the hormone aldosterone, which causes the kidneys to retain water by removing sodium from urine. Irindalone also has effects on the central nervous system, influencing 5-HT2c receptors. This may lead to antihypertensive activity, as well as increasing serotonin uptake in the brain. The drug may also help with inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNFalpha, IL-1beta, IL-6 and IL-8.
