Colony-stimulating factor is a polypeptide hormone that stimulates the growth and development of white blood cells. CMK is a colony-stimulating factor that promotes the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. It has been shown to prevent apoptosis and inhibit p21 protein expression in HL60 cells as well as increase mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular Ca2+ levels, and leukocyte production. The experimental model used in these studies was leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) deficient mice. CMK can be used to stimulate hematopoiesis, which may be beneficial for treatment of diseases such as leukemia.
