PPZ2 is a basic protein that activates phosphatases. It has been shown to inhibit the replication of viruses, such as HIV and influenza A, by binding to the response element-binding protein (RBP) in the viral genome. PPZ2 also binds to RBP and inhibits its ability to activate the transcriptional regulatory proteins. This inhibition prevents virus replication by preventing the synthesis of viral proteins, leading to cell lysis. PPZ2 has synergistic effects with other antiviral drugs such as ribavirin, which may be due to its ability to bind RBP and inhibit its activity.
