G6PD activator ag1 is an indole that is oxidized to the corresponding disulfide form, G6Pd activator ag1-S. The compound has been shown to activate glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) by forming a covalent bond with the enzyme's cysteine residue. The activation of G6PD leads to increased activity and a higher rate of substrate oxidation. This in turn increases the rate of formation of NADH and FADH2, which are important electron carriers in oxidative phosphorylation.
