EMD386088 is a novel, orally active drug that has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity in diabetic animals. It prevents the development of pain by acting on dopamine receptors and inhibiting 5-HT6 receptor activation. EMD386088 also has serotonergic properties and can be used for the treatment of metabolic disorders. This drug increases energy metabolism, which may be due to its effect on the striatal dopamine system. EMD386088 was found to be well tolerated in both animal studies and Phase I clinical trials, with no significant adverse events reported at doses up to 150 mg/day.
