Procaterol is a bronchodilator that is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, making it easier for people to breathe. Procaterol has been shown to be effective in reducing chronic coughs and asthma symptoms. The drug binds to beta-2 adrenergic receptors on the surface of cells in the lungs, which then send signals through two main pathways: one that stimulates cells of the lung tissue and one that stimulates cells in the brain. The drug also inhibits cyclase activity, which prevents activation of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC). This inhibition reduces inflammation caused by PKA and PKC-mediated activation of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-12.
