Penciclovir diacetate is an antiviral drug that belongs to the group of synthetic, broad-spectrum antiviral agents. It is an analogue of penciclovir that is used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis in immunocompromised patients. Penciclovir diacetate inhibits viral replication by blocking reverse transcriptase and DNA polymerase. Penciclovir diacetate also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to bacterial DNA gyrase. Penciclovir diacetate has been shown to be effective against microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, including HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1, and influenza A virus.
