ABT-418 is an analog of methylphenidate that binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) and enhances the release of acetylcholine. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating hyperactivity in tobacco-exposed rats, which may be due to its ability to stimulate nAChRs and affect their function. ABT-418 also has a dose-dependent effect on locomotor activity and can reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms by acting as a ligand for nAChRs. ABT-418 may also have potential use in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and schizophrenia.
