Ifenprodil is a ligand with the ability to activate potassium channels. It is a potent inhibitor of voltage-gated potassium channels, which are responsible for regulating the flow of potassium ions across neuronal cell membranes. It has been shown to inhibit acetylcholine-induced contractions in isolated guinea pig ileum and to prolong the duration of action potentials in rat sciatic nerve. Ifenprodil has also been shown to inhibit voltage-gated potassium channels in cardiac myocytes and neurons, leading to increased heart rate and decreased neurotransmitter release respectively. In addition, ifenprodil can be used as a research tool for studying ion channel activity and pharmacology.
