Siltenzepine is a fatty acid derivative that has been shown to inhibit beta-lactamase, an enzyme that hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring in beta-lactam antibiotics. It is used as a linker for pharmaceutical dosage forms and as a diluent for reconstituted drugs. Siltenzepine is also used as a diagnostic agent for the detection of biliary obstruction. Siltenzepine acts by inhibiting fatty acid binding to pump proteins in the ileal mucosa. This inhibits the reuptake of bile acids from the ileum, which increases their levels in blood plasma and allows them to be excreted into the intestine. The terminal half-life of siltenzepine ranges from two to four hours.
