IL-13 is a cytokine that belongs to the IL-4 family of proteins. It was originally identified as a T cell growth factor and has been shown to bind to the receptor for IL-4, which is a heterodimeric complex consisting of two subunits: IL-4Rα and the common γ chain. IL-13 has been shown to activate this receptor by binding to it and then activating STAT6, which is the signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 protein. This leads to its activation of other genes that are responsible for regulating inflammation in cells. IL-13 has also been shown to inhibit ion channels in both neurons and pancreatic beta cells, leading to its anti-diabetic properties.
