Product Information
PK68 is a synthetic analog of carotenoids that has been shown to inhibit the replication of viruses and cancer cells. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. PK68 inhibits viral replication by inhibiting the activity of cellular enzymes, such as protein kinase C, which are involved in the activation of viral proteins. PK68 has been shown to inhibit human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication in vitro and in vivo in rat liver microsomes and recombinant cells activated with phorbol ester 12-myristate 13-acetate. PK68 also inhibits the production of nitric oxide by macrophages, which is an inflammatory response triggered by HIV infection.
PK68 is not absorbed orally and must be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. The pharmacokinetic properties have not been studied extensively but PK68 is rapidly metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, which may limit its use as a drug in humans.
