A 1899 is an inorganic compound that is neurotrophic and has been shown to reduce the severity of hepatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by liver disease. It also has antiviral properties, as it inhibits hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication in vitro. A 1899 binds to the telomeric DNA of HBV and prevents the formation of full-length viral DNA. This drug also has antineoplastic effects on human cancer cells in culture and induces cell death via apoptosis. A 1899 may be used to prepare samples for analysis using an atomic absorption spectrometer to measure solutes such as styrene, which can be detected at low levels after reaction with a sodium or potassium counterion.
