CDM-NAG is a conjugate of N-acetylgalactosamine (CDM) and N-acetylglucosamine (NAG). CDM-NAG is an acidic compound that has been shown to cause lysis of cells by destabilizing the membrane, reducing the intracellular pH to below 5.0. This compound also has effects on metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus, which may be due to its ability to form polymers with proteins or nucleic acids in the cytoplasm. The polymerization of CDM-NAG occurs at low pH values and can be reversed by raising the pH. The interactions of CDM-NAG with membranes are reversible, allowing this compound to be used as a probe for studying membrane interactions. CDM-NAG also targets gene expression and has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in target cells by interfering with the formation of asialoglycoproteins on the
