Talabostat is a potent anticancer agent that inhibits the activity of enzymes. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is being studied as a potential treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer. This drug may also have antimicrobial activities, as it has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Talabostat is an ester hydrochloride that binds to the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and blocks its catalytic activity, which prevents prostaglandin synthesis. COX-2 inhibitors are used for pain relief and to treat inflammation, but they can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as ulcers or bleeding. The crystalline cellulose in talabostat may be able to bind these side effects and prevent them from occurring.
