UCL 1684 is a voltage-dependent calcium channel blocker that binds to the voltage-dependent calcium channels of inflammatory cells. It blocks the flow of calcium ions into the cells, thereby preventing the release of proinflammatory substances. This agent has been shown to be effective in treating bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, in infants. UCL 1684 may also be effective in treating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism by which this drug works is not fully understood, but it may inhibit inflammatory responses by blocking voltage-dependent calcium channels on immune cells or by inhibiting the production of cytokines within these cells.
