Product Information

Name:
Bis(7)-tacrine
Synonyms:
  • 1,7-Heptanediamine, N1,N7-bis(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9-acridinyl)-, hydrochloride (1:2)
  • 1,7-Heptanediamine, N,N′-bis(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9-acridinyl)-, dihydrochloride
Description:

Bis(7)-tacrine is a neuroprotective drug that has been shown to prevent glutamate-induced excitotoxicity in the cerebellum. It binds to the noncompetitive NMDA receptor and inhibits calcium ion flux into the cell, thereby reducing neuronal death. The mechanism of action for Bis(7)-tacrine is similar to that of other neuroprotective drugs, such as memantine or riluzole. In addition, Bis(7)-tacrine has also been found to be a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase activity. This may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO).
