Product Information
Enalapril is a peptide inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). It is used in the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. Inhibiting ACE prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, which causes vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure. Enalapril has been shown to bind to specific receptors on cells that line the blood vessels and prevent them from constricting or dilating. This effect on vascular tone may be due to inhibition of calcium channels or activation of potassium channels. Enalapril may also inhibit ion channels in smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation.
