Ceramide is a sphingolipid that can be found in the outer membrane of cells. It is also found in the brain and retina. Ceramide is a lipid molecule that contains a hydrophobic tail, which is composed of two fatty acid chains, one of which is 20-carbon long. The other fatty acid chain in ceramide may be either 16 or 18 carbons long. C20 Ceramide (d17:1/20:0) has been shown to inhibit ion channels.
