Neomycin

Description:
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic primarily used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It is derived from the bacterium Streptomyces fradiae and is known for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Neomycin is characterized by its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, which disrupts the translation process. This antibiotic is often administered topically in ointments or eye drops due to its potential nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity when used systemically. Neomycin is also used in some formulations to prepare patients for surgery by reducing intestinal bacteria. Its solubility in water allows for easy formulation in various pharmaceutical preparations. However, its use is limited by the risk of adverse effects, including allergic reactions and toxicity, particularly in individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions. Overall, neomycin remains an important agent in the treatment of localized infections and as a part of combination therapies.
