BHA is an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, which causes it to have anti-inflammatory properties. It also has been shown to inhibit the production of cytokines and chemokines by inhibiting transcriptional regulation. BHA increases the cytosolic calcium concentration in cells, which leads to enzyme activities such as p450 activity being increased; this inhibition of enzymes slows down the rate at which cells can produce inflammatory molecules. The optimal concentration of BHA for these effects has been found to be 0.2% (w/v).
