Description:
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), with the CAS number 335-67-1, is a synthetic perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) characterized by a long carbon chain fully saturated with fluorine atoms, making it highly stable and resistant to degradation. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is one of the most commonly used perfluorinated compounds and is known to cause hepatic peroxisome proliferation in rodents (1). Being a persistent environmental pollutant, it can accumulate in human tissues via various exposure routes. PFOA may interfere in a toxic fashion on the immune system, liver, development, and endocrine systems through alteration of DNA methylation enzymes (2,3,4). Drinking water contaminant candidate list 3 (CCL 3) compound as per United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), environmental, and food contaminants.
