:Sulbactam
Description:
Sulbactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor commonly used in combination with certain antibiotics to enhance their efficacy against resistant bacterial strains. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and exhibits a molecular formula that reflects its structure as a β-lactam compound. Sulbactam works by irreversibly binding to β-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, which are responsible for the degradation of β-lactam antibiotics, thereby protecting these antibiotics from being inactivated. This characteristic makes sulbactam particularly valuable in treating infections caused by β-lactamase-producing organisms. It is often combined with antibiotics such as ampicillin to broaden the spectrum of activity against various pathogens. Sulbactam is generally well-tolerated, with a safety profile that includes mild to moderate side effects. Its clinical applications are primarily in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including those associated with respiratory, urinary tract, and skin infections.
