Astemizole

Description:
Astemizole is an antihistamine that was primarily used to treat allergic conditions such as hay fever and urticaria. It belongs to the class of selective H1 receptor antagonists and is characterized by its long duration of action. Astemizole is a lipophilic compound, which allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially leading to central nervous system effects. Its chemical structure features a piperidine ring and a substituted phenyl group, contributing to its pharmacological properties. However, astemizole has been associated with serious cardiac side effects, particularly arrhythmias, due to its ability to prolong the QT interval. This risk led to its withdrawal from many markets in the late 1990s. Despite its efficacy in alleviating allergic symptoms, the safety concerns surrounding its use have limited its application in clinical practice. As a result, astemizole is no longer widely prescribed, and alternative antihistamines with better safety profiles have become more prevalent.
