Pefloxacin

Description:
Pefloxacin is a synthetic antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, primarily used to treat bacterial infections. Its chemical structure features a fluorinated quinolone core, which enhances its antibacterial activity by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for DNA replication and transcription. Pefloxacin exhibits broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it effective for various infections, including urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections. It is typically administered orally and has good bioavailability. The drug is known for its relatively low side effect profile, although it can cause gastrointestinal disturbances and, in rare cases, tendon damage. Pefloxacin is also characterized by its ability to penetrate tissues effectively, which is beneficial for treating infections in different body compartments. However, its use has declined in some regions due to the emergence of bacterial resistance and the availability of newer fluoroquinolones with improved safety and efficacy profiles. As with all antibiotics, appropriate use is crucial to minimize resistance development.
